  1. The Firehouse Salad looks v. good – did you make it yet? Although I don’t get the green light that often on using cilantro I think I could do it once in awhile where it makes the difference. I have almost everything on hand except beets to make that today – especially a lovely mango begging to star in something. It also gives me a way to possibly inprove the marinated chickpeas I did last night as a starter (see http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/tapas-plate-marinated-chickpeas-recipe-00000000034276/index.html). I realize a lifetime of eating California/NM/Arizona/Mexican food and no real experience with real Spanish cuisine other than a few tapas bar experiences means I don’t quite have the right expectation of Spanish flavours. It seemed lacking an edge – no real acid is included in the recipe. I did add a bit of lemon zest and used a Penzey’s red/black pepper blend, but I think I would have preferred this cumin-based dressing…next a hybrid. I’ve also been doing chickpeas from scratch and they are lovely. Of course in a pinch like a quick first course last night I went for the tinned 😉 Happy summer salad days!
